Field Trip
South Okanagan-Similkameen Tour
The PRSSS got down and dirty in the
beautiful Similkameen and South Okanagan to get a taste of all things
soils-related. The trip spanned agricultural, grassland and forested
sites. We learned about soils and weed ecology research, water
conservation, and growers' management of their soils and 'terroir' to
produce some tasty apples and wines. Of course, no trip to this area
would be complete without having tasted these apples and wines for
ourselves. Many thanks to our speakers, Mennell Orchards for a
fantastic campsite and 100-foot breakfast, all the volunteer
organizers and those who attended for making this a successful field
trip.
April
27, 2010: A little while back, Dr. David Clements had written about his
experiences on this field trip. We had meant to include it in a
newsletter earlier this year. Anyway, it stands alone
as a wonderful account of a dynamic and exciting field trip. Caution:
it might make you wish that you were there.
